Breeding Your First Foal
Practical guidance and support for first-time foal breeders
Breeding your first foal can be one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences you will ever have with your mare.
It can also feel rather daunting.
There are decisions to make about your mare, the stallion, veterinary care, costs, facilities, foaling and the future of the youngster you hope to breed. It can be difficult to know where to begin — particularly when you don’t yet know which questions you need to ask.
At West End Farm Stud, we want to help first-time breeders understand the journey ahead, make informed decisions and feel properly prepared.
Should I breed from my mare?
Before choosing a stallion or arranging a covering, it is worth taking a step back
and considering whether breeding is the right decision for you and your mare.
Our free guide, Should I Breed From My Mare?, will help you think about:
Why you want to breed a foal
Whether your mare is suitable for breeding
What you hope the foal will become
Choosing a suitable stallion
The likely costs involved
What might happen if things don’t go according to plan
The foal’s long-term future
Guidance based on Practical Experience
West End Farm Stud is a small, family-run sport horse stud on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds.
We stand our own stallions, host several walk-in stallions and provide visiting mare livery, foaling and weaning services. Through our work with mare owners, we understand how many questions arise when someone is considering breeding their first foal
There is no such thing as a silly question. We would much rather help someone ask the right questions before breeding than leave them to work everything out alone.
Our aim is not to tell you that you should breed from your mare. It is to help you understand what is involved so that you can make the right decision for your mare, the future foal and your own circumstances.
