For the Amateur rider, the “dream horse” usually needs to tick three boxes: Sanity, Stamina and Scope. After 30 years of breeding here in East Yorkshire, we’ve seen trends come and go. But one consistently stands the test of time, the Connemara Cross. At West End Farm Stud, we’ve made it our mission to breed these versatile horses for the amateur market.
Why the Connemara Cross?
1 – The Brain: Purebred Connemara’s are known for their easy-to-do” attitude. When crossed with a finer sport horse or Thoroughbred, you retain the sensible, forgiving brain while adding a bit more engine.
2 – Durability: These horses are hardy. They have good bone and sound feet, which is exactly what horse owners’ needs for a horse that can compete at the weekend or enjoy a hack on a Tuesday.
3 – The “Look”; They are stunning. Whether it’s for dressage, eventing or showing, the Connemara cross brings a stamp of quality that stands out in the ring.
The Ultimate "Family Heirloom" and Financial Safety Net
Beyond the physical traits, the real reason the Connemara cross dominates the amateur market is its unique status as the ultimate “Family Heirloom”. Because they typically mature between 15hhs and 15.3hhs, they occupy the most converted “share” bracket in the equestrian world. They have enough bone and substance to carry an adult comfortably on the hunt field or in a dressage arena yet retain the pony-like kindness and manageable proportions for a teenager to produce in Pony Club. So, your horse can truly grow with a family, rather than being outgrown.
This brings us to the most pragmatic benefit of all; In an unpredictable economy, an elite, high strung competition horse has a narrow market of buyers. In contract, a sensible Connemara cross with a “been there, done that” attitude has a queue of buyers waiting at the gate. Whether a rider’s circumstances change or they simply decide to move on, these horses hold their value better than almost any other cross. Breeding a “Connie-cross” isn’t just a passion project, it’s a sound investment in a horse that - regardless of discipline – will always be in high demand.
